We live in an area that has seen tremendous change through its association with the textile industry – from the early days as a cottage industry, through the industrial revolution which saw the development of some of the biggest factories and mills in the world to the final decline and loss of jobs through the twentieth century.

This history of change is all around us, in the geography and built environment but more importantly in who we are as people and why we belong here. So it seems quite fitting to use textiles as a medium to explore the Change theme, especially as textile art is nowadays recognised as an artform in its own right. Celebrating our histories and neighbourhoods, weaving the stories of our lives, friends and families into exciting, colourful works of art – the choice of subject is yours – as long as it conveys your idea of change.

Choose from a wide variety of textile-based techniques which are simple but produce stunning results and which therefore give scope for individual and group projects for all ages and abilities. Fabric construction and manipulation using techniques such as bonding fabrics, paper and yarn; collage; hand embroidery and applique; knotting and macramé – all offer opportunities to explore texture, pattern and colour and to experiment with different materials, with added possibilities such as incorporating text and mixed media. Small individual pieces or samplers can be put together as a collective display or combined to create a group wallhanging, rug, mobile…
